What is Mounted Shooting?
Cowboy Mounted Shooting is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in North America. Mounted shooting is like barrel racing on STEROIDS! Mounted competitors dressed in colorful old west or buckaroo style outfits gallop through over 50 different patterns, each made up of 10 balloon targets. The targets are engaged with a single action .45 loaded with specially designed spectator safe ammunition with no projectile that can bread the balloons at up to 20 feet. Scoring is based upon total time plus penalties.
Mounted shooters come from all ages, 8 to 80 and all skill levels. With age relevant divisions beginning with the Wranglers who are under 11 to the senior are who are … a little older, all broken into classes 1 – 6. Every new competitor begins as a level 1 and moves up through the ranks as they win at events. All types and breeds of equine partners are used in mounted shooting including quarter horses, paints, gaited horses and even MULES! Any well mannered and trained equine is eligible to enter.

It’s fast – it’s exciting – it’s colorful and one BIG WARNING! It’s so much fun you may become ADDICTED!
But the best thing about cowboy mounted shooting is the people! The family atmosphere pervades all levels of competition, from a small local event all the way to the World Championship. And you’ll not find a better, more generous group of cowboys and cowgirls anywhere in the world. When the phrase ‘the cowboy way’ is used when referring to mounted shooters it’s not a cliché it’s a way of life and competition.
CMSA – The Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association became involved with the Tough Enough to Wear Pink effort to help long time sponsor and supporter, Wrangler reach its goal to raise awareness and money for education and research to fight breast cancer. Pink Day was instituted at the CMSA Major Championships and that effort has grown into a full blown effort to fight this terrible disease. |
With the help of Annie Bianco-Ellett, who serves as National Spokesperson for both CMSA and Wrangler, an alliance was formed with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Nashville. What began as an event with a goal to raise $10,000.00 has blossomed, with the help and support of many sponsors (please visit the Event Supporters Page), into an event that we hope will raise two to three times that amount and perhaps become annual event.
Tell your friends, tell your family and make plans to come to Miller Coliseum on Wednesday, September 5th to see some of the top mounted shooters nationwide compete for a great cause, be prepared to bid on auction items like a celebrity signed guitar and more. And of course, stay and enjoy an acoustic concert with Trent Willmon.
